Over the last few years, market demand in\nterms of sustainability has become increasingly pressing. Re-thinking and\nre-planning companies\u2019 activities from a sustainable perspective is no longer a\nvoluntary choice but has rather become a duty: today companies are called upon\nto question their own environmental impact. Sustainability, intended not just\nin terms of environment, has thus become an important driver for all business\ndecisions concerning supply chain activities and processes: today we call it Sustainable\nSupply Chain (SSC)<\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

 <\/span><\/p>

While sustainability issues are growing in\nimportance and are escalating the agendas of C-executives worldwide, the\nmethodologies and approaches to manage them are just starting to develop and to\nbe embedded along companies operational and strategic routines.
\nOne of the major challenges relies in the alignment between traditional\nperformance indicators<\/b> (such as profitability, productivity, service\nperformance, quality, etc.) with new indicators introduced by sustainability<\/b>\nrelated topics (e.g., carbon footprint indicators, LCA, scope 1-2-3\ndecomposition of company\u2019s footprint, resource consumption, circularity index,\netc.). As most of the times, when trying to pursue different objectives on\ndifferent performance (such as the one of sustainability and profitability) the\noutcome may result in a trade-off situation which may leave the company in a\nstrategic impasse.
\nThis situation highlights the emerging need for tools and methodologies able to\nsupport multi-performance decision making across company\u2019s levels in rapid\ntimes and with reliable results.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

 <\/span><\/p>

In order to provide decision makers with a\nholistic overview on performances, dynamic simulation modelling<\/b> appears\nto be very suitable for this purpose. The reason for adopting a quantitative\ntechnique such as simulation modelling, capable of describing the behavior of\nthe analyzed variables over time, is simple: since environmental sustainability\nis measurable in quantitative terms, there are no explicit reasons to exclude\nthis area of analysis from the panel of performance simulated in a model or in\na scenario. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Since the model is usually used to represent and simulate, with high\naccuracy, a specific company\u2019s supply chain and its related performance, it\ncould be easily expanded also to track and estimate the environmental footprint\nof the supply chain itself, which is mainly caused by the production and\ntransportation of goods across the value chain.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Once validated, the supply chain model (which under certain conditions\nmay evolve in a supply chain digital twin) is then capable of estimating\nconcurrently both financial, operational and sustainable performance of the\nvalue chain. This characteristic provides decision makers with punctual and\nreliable insights on what could be the real impacts, benefits and threats of\nimplementing certain decisions, especially when trying to enhance the\nsustainability performance.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

For a better understanding of this methodology, this article presents a case application of simulation modelling for the deployment of the\nsustainability strategy of a company working in the dairy industry<\/b>. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
